Carved Ivory Horse Button

 This is a very nice horse button which I've carved from pre-ban African elephant ivory.  The button is the front half of a rearing horse with flowing mane.  The horse's eye is inlaid black bakelite.  The button is very nicely proportioned and detailed with a very nice polish, it measures just under 1 3/4 inches at the longest measurement and has a self shank carved onto the back.  I've also inscribed my signature and the date upon the back.

Carved Vegetable Ivory Horse Button

 Here is a great button which I've carved depicting a horse running with plumes of dust swirling around its hooves.  The button is carved from vegetable ivory from the palm nut tree and I've added a bit of dyes to color it, as well as some black enamel for the hooves and a bit of black bakelite inlaid for the eye.  The button measures a bit over 2 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Jet Horse Button

 This horse head button is carved from a handsome chunk of Jet.  Jet is a type of fossil wood which comes from only a few places in the world.  The more famous jet which was commonly carved into jewelry during Victorian times came from Whitby England, this jet is mined in the Lake Bakal region of Siberia, Russia.  The horse's head which I've carved is carefully detailed and polished and has an eye which is inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures 1 7/8 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Ivory & Horn Mechanical Cowboy Button

 This is a dandy button which I've carved from pre-ban African Elephant ivory and Asian Water Buffalo horn.  The button is a cowboy who has a large black hat (horn) that I've attached with two tiny screws from either side so that the horn will tip forwards over the cowpoke's eyes, or back to expose his forehead.  The cowboy's boots are also horn and I used enamel paints to color his red bandana, his flesh tones and the belt and cartridges.  The little yellow-orange dots along the sides of his chaps are inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures right at 1 7/8 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Vegetable Ivory & Ivory Indian Button

 Here is a handsome button which I've carved from vegetable ivory in the form of an Indian brave.  The indian has black hair (and black eyes) which I colored with black India Ink, and two white feathers stuck into his headband that are carved from pre-ban African elephant ivory.  I carved a self shank onto the back and inscribed my signature there as well.  The button measures just under 1 3/4 inches at the longest measurement.

Carved Ivory & Bakelite Sailor and Boat Button

 Here is a great little button that I've carved from pre-ban African elephant ivory and blue bakelite.  The body of the button is carved from the ivory and into that I've inset the blue bakelite.  The little sailor is nicely detailed and salutes with one hand while the other grasps the boat's mast.  The red flag at top is painted with enamel paint.  The button measures right at 1 1/2 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved & Dyed Deer Antler School of Fishies Button

 Here is a fun little button that I've carved from deer antler and dyed blue prior to polishing it.  The button depicts a small school of four fishies swimming, or racing, together.  The carving is very detailed and the dye really makes it stand out wonderfully.  The eyes of the fish are all inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures right at 2 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Fossil Walrus Ivory Squid Button

 This is a button which I've carved from fossil walrus ivory.  The button is of a nice big squid with red coloring that I added with a light enamel wash.  The squid's eye is inlaid using bakelite.  The button measures 1 7/8 inches long and 1 1/8 inches wide, it ha a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Vegetable Ivory & Catlinite Hen & Chicks Button

 This is a very nice button depicting a hen and four baby chicks chasing a big red earth worm crawling out of the dirt.  The body of the button which the hen & chicks is carved from (as well as the tall bunch of grass in the background) is vegetable ivory.  The hen's comb, beak, and eye are inlaid using bakelite.  The worm is catlinite, or pipestone, and the rest of the colors are all applied using dye.  This is a wonderfully detailed and very dimensional button.  It measures right at 1 3/4 inches at the longest measurement, has a self shank carved on the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Ivory & Bakelite Saint Bernard Button

 Here is a fun button depicting a Saint Bernard rescue dog carrying a First Aid Kit.  The dog is carved from pre-ban African elephant ivory with brown bakelite inlaid over it for the main part of the head.  The eyes are inlaid using bone and bakelite.  The dog's nose is also bakelite.  The first aid "keg" is carved from pecan wood and hangs from gold plated necklace chain.  The small red cross on the keg is painted with enamel paint.  The button measures right at 1 3/4 inches with the dangling keg, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Jet Bear's Head Button

 This is a large bear's head button which I've carved from Jet.  Jet is a fossil wood which is mined in the Lake Bakal Region of Siberia, Russia.  The bear's head has eyes and a nose inlaid using bone and bakelite.  The teeth are painted using enamel paint.  The button measures a bit under 1 3/4 inches, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed there as well.

Carved Ivory Good Shepherd Button

This is another Christian themed button that I've carved from pre-ban elephant ivory, the good shepherd with the lamb on His shoulder and a nickel plated steel shepherd's staff in his hand. I used some dye to lightly wash some of the details. The button measures a bit over 1 & 1/4 inches.

Jet Locomotive Train

This great little steam engine locomotive Train button is carved from Jet. Jet is fossil charcoal and this particular material is mined from the Lake Bakal region of Siberia, it is very similar in quality to the Whitby jet from England. The train is carved realistically and has enamel painted details. The button measures 1 3/8 inches, has a self shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed.

Jet & Mother of Pearl 2 Owls on A Limb

This is a pair of owls that I carved from white mother of pearl and then inlaid into a jet button base that I carved with a limb sticking out from a tree trunk. The jet is fossil charcoal and is mined from the Lake Bakal region of Siberia, it is very similar in quality to the Whitby jet from England. I applied just a light wash of India ink to some of the carved details in the owls to add depth. The button measures just under 1 1/4 inches, has a self shank on the back and my signature and the date inscribed.

Fossil Ivory Fish Button

This is a great looking little fishy that I've carved from fossil walrus ivory. This particular fossil ivory was nicely colored by minerals as it laid buried in the ground. I utilized the brown color of the outside of the tusk to enhance the fish's fins and also inlaid an eye made from deer antler and cow horn.
The fish measures 1 1/4 inches, has a self shank and my signature and the date inscribed.

Ivory & Bakelite Hand holding Fan

Here is a lovely hand holding a fan button that I've carved from pre-ban elephant ivory and Bakelite. The base of the button, including the fan and the cuff, is ivory and then the Bakelite hand is inlaid with a bit of enamel for added detail. The button measures just under 1 1/4 inches, has a self shank and my signature and the date carved onto the back.

Mechanical Ivory & Steel Pocket Knife Button

 Here is a blade that you just might get away with carrying onto the plane......  This pocket knife button is carved from legal Hippopotamus ivory with a stainless steel blade which opens and closes just like a real pocket knife.  Currently the blade is dull but I can sharpen it if you wish.  I added silver enamel on the ends of the knife to make it appear more realistic.  It has a self-shank carved onto the back and my signature and the date inscribed.  The button measures just a bit under 1 & 1/8 inches.
